CONTEXT > LUXEMBOURG The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is an open, successful and dynamic economy. Luxembourg owes its wealth to the discovery of iron ore in the south of the country, hence the development of a powerful steel industry. Keen to diversify the economic structure of the country, an active development policy was implemented, thus attracting modern businesses from the most varied branches of activity, using the latest techniques. The service sector is mainly dominated by the finance sector. Luxembourg is among the top ten financial markets in the world. The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a favoured place of work for European Union institutions. Telecommunications have been defined as one of the key areas in the future development of Luxembourg's economy. Based at Luxembourg's international airport, air freight has greatly evolved with a view to supporting its export industry. More than 80% of Luxembourg's production is exported : articles manufactured in base metals, machines and equipment and chemical products contribute to the growth in exports. Wholesale trade is also proving to be very dynamic following the development of numerous activities specialising in import-export. Besides the services and the financial market, industrial diversification can be seen in the chemical and plastics sectors, in synthetic materials, the mechanics sectors, in the processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, in the sectors of automation systems, precision tools, electronics, the glass industry and wood processing. |
